Haven't seen much about this other than people saying it was incredibly powerful

That is just crazy. I can't begin to imagine being in an earthquake let alone a tsunami.

There were a few days we felt distressed when Bob's friend in Santiago did not reply to his e-mail - thankfully they are OK.  Our friends in Australia were kind enough to keep us posted (we traveled with them in Chile and stayed with their families).  I had just switched on the news and watching in disbelief when the mail arrived with a package from Australia -- it was a 2010 calendar of beautiful photographs of places in Chile.  A lovely surprise and yet bittersweet.

There will be plenty of help for the people.  I worry that there may not be for the many homeless animals.  This is a serious problem in Chile that would rip out your heart.
